Native Ramón E. González III honored by UT

By La Prensa Staff

Ramón E. González III is an amazing person, with an amazing career. He was honored on April 12, 2019 at the University of Toledo’s 2019 Business Pacemaker Award.

The University of Toledo College of Business and Innovation and the Business Engagement and Leadership Council hosted its 56th annual Pacemaker Awards at the Inverness Club, where various alumni were recognized and honored.

Mr. González received his bachelor of business administration degree from UT in 1961. He then split his career between serving as a foreign service officer at the U.S. State Department, as assistant vice president at Merrill Lynch, and as chief financial officer of Lone Star Seed Co. in San Antonio TX. He is now retired, spending time with his wife Ofelia [whom he met in México City 24 years ago at a family wedding] between Texas and Florida.

He also served in the military, serving two years in the Vietnam engagement, and is a retired captain of the United States Army Reserve. He is a past member of the staff of the U.S. House of Representatives, and a member emeritus and past secretary of the Explorers Club, Washington Group.

Mr. González is a native of Toledo, graduating from Central Catholic High School.  The University alumnus is a strong supporter of the College of Business and Innovation's Edward H. Schmidt School of Professional Sales. He and his family regularly visit UT every fall.

The Pacemaker Award is the College of Business and Innovation's highest honor, recognizing individuals for outstanding achievement in business, as well as contributions to the community and the University, said. Dr. Anne L. Balazs, Dean of the College of Business and Innovation. “We also are proud to recognize our business students at this prestigious annual event.”

Student Pacemaker Awards are presented to College of Business and Innovation graduate and undergraduate students for their outstanding academic achievement, University and community service, and leadership. The 2019 Student Pacemaker Award recipients announced Friday were:

• Master of Business Administration - Himabindu Katrapati;

• Master of Science in Accountancy - Constance Baumgartner;

• Accounting - Rachael Noe and Hannah Smith;

• Applied Organizational Management - Gregory Matuszynski II;

• Information Operations Technology Management - Cassidy Hamill and Scott Pribe;

• Management - Laurie Britt and Quinne Meyer;

In an interview with La Prensa after the Friday event, Mr. González informed La Prensa that he and his sister Irene have created a scholarship fund focused on Latino students in the respective students’ quests for education and degrees at the University of Toledo and as further explained in the Editor’s Note below.

Editor’s Note: According to Deirdre Jones, MBA, director of College of Business and Innovation Edward Schmidt School of Professional Sales, the scholarship created is the Ramón & Irene González Scholarship.  It is an estate/deferred gift.  When it does go into effect, students will apply online using UT’s College of Business & Innovation’s single scholarship form.  The scholarship is for gifted Latino students (identified as merit students in the top 10% of applicants) with a preference for students in UT’s College of Business and Innovation Edward Schmidt School of Professional Sales (ESSPS).
